HAPPINESS-IT'S JUST NOT THAT ELUSIVE
“Life holds so much – so much to be so happy about always. Most people ask for happiness on
condition. Happiness can be felt only if you don’t set conditions.” – Arthur Rubenstein
“If I was rich, I’d be happy.” “If I was in the right relationship, I’d be happy.” “If I lived somewhere else, I’d be happy.” The list could go on and on. We always seem to think that happiness is elusive, available to us only under the right conditions. But that’s not where happiness is. Happiness is available in any moment of any day. We have to find it in the only time we have – the present moment. Now is the only time we have control of. If we don’t find happiness in the now, we have no guarantee of finding it in the future. When we place these conditions on happiness we tell ourselves that we can’t be happy now because we don’t have those things. We will always be in a state of wanting with happiness always a destination we can’t seem to reach. And how do we even know if being rich, being in our idea of the right relationship, or living somewhere else will actually bring us happiness?
“Life holds … so much to be so happy about always.” It’s there. It’s up to us to make the decision to find it. Look, listen, smell, taste, touch. Take in the world around you always and the people you encounter. As often as there is reason to be unhappy, there is reason to be happy. Choose happiness. It doesn’t mean that you discount unhappiness. It’s just that you recognize happiness is available now.
Use an affirmation like Wayne Dyer’s “I want to feel good” to replace those thoughts of “I’ll be happy when ….” Say it repeatedly in order to seek out happiness. Soon happiness will be your default state. When we find happiness in our life right NOW we realize that happiness was never elusive. And it’s unconditional.
